Verizon’s FiOS utilizes a flexible approach to managing IP networks. It begins by managing the Ethernet subnet of the internal network… but then connects every device that needs an Internet connection via its local Ethernet port. In order to facilitate connection, Verizon utilizes two types of communications… EDGE Optical and Verizon Wide Area Trace (WAN) with EDGE Digital are the low-cost mode. Each of these communication methods has a different set of MSA settings. This article will focus on Verizon Wide Area Trace (WAN) and address some of the commonly asked questions and the technical specifications of this popular Verizon enterprise-grade networking technology.
How does Verizon Wide Area Trace (WAN) work? First, Verizon’s WAN routers receive their address from the main switch, which is powered by Verizon’s own fiber network. Once the WAN router receives the address, it looks for an available gateway through which it can contact the internal switch or other necessary information to configure the necessary connection. Once it has been able to find a suitable gateway, it returns the generated Ethernet address and duration for the received data. In essence, Verizon routers function like a simple computer that receives and sends information… and it’s this basic process that determines how your connection to Verizon FiOS is affected if you make any changes to the default settings on your router.

The primary feature behind Verizon’s FiOS system is its unified communications services. With this approach, Verizon utilizes its own EDGE network and Broadband connections to transmit all the data to homes, businesses, and libraries across the nation. Because of this architecture, Verizon’s routers and other units use their own default configuration settings for all devices. The question is, how do you change those default settings to improve the performance of your connection? The answer lies in using the “iwbtc” command-line interface, which is included on all Verizon FiOS routers and is enabled by default.
The “iwbtc” command-line utility enables you to access your Verizon FiOS router via a web browser… using a simple graphical user interface. The “iwbtc” command-line tool operates using a graphical interface (GUI) that makes it easy to use. Once you’ve used the wireless IP changing software… you will see that it can be very useful. There is a wizard that will guide you through the whole process of changing the various settings on your Verizon FiOS router. Once you have changed some settings, you can test the new configuration by simply accessing the Web browser.
You can test the WiFi connection by creating a test account. The interface on the Verizon FiOS web browser will allow you to create a free account. Then, log into this account with your user name and password. You will be given a default username and password, which you can change at any time. If you change the default username and password on your Verizon FiOS router… the default settings will automatically be modified to match your current login information.
After you’ve successfully logged in to your Verizon FiOS router… then you can access the web browser by clicking the Verizon FiOS icon on your desktop or laptop computer. You will need to connect to the internet using your preferred secure Wi-Fi network. Once you are connected to the internet, use the Verizon FiOS Web browser to access the Verizon FiOS site. You will see an option for changing your Wireless IP Address.
If you want to change your Wireless IP Address, then simply click on the button marked ‘Network settings’ on the left hand side of the web browser. On the following page, you will see a section marked ‘Wireless Internet Connection.’ Click on the link labelled ‘IP Changing.’ On the following page, you will see a tabbed list of four choices. The first option (statically selected) is the standard IP (Internet Protocol). The other three choices are pre-determined, based on your current FiOS carrier and the city and country where you live.
